Home Plate Provisions is a regional specialty grocery and gift shop.

Many of their unique products are perfect picnic essentials. The owner came to me with a dream of creating an illustrated map of picnic spots in Wilmington, North Carolina to complement the store's offerings. The goal was a bold, colorful watercolor map that was portable and easy to read to encourage shop patrons to get out and explore the local area.

Visual Direction

After our initial discovery meeting, I began the design process with research. I presented the client with lots of visual examples to pinpoint her vision for the style of the illustrations and overall direction for the map, which would guide the copywriting and other elements that would need to be created. I also nailed down a finished size and determined how the map would fold before proceeding with illustration.

Building the Map

Once we had a clear direction and list of locations, I set to work plotting out the base map and placement of spot illustrations. While we wanted the map to be geographically accurate, the layout was limited by our intended finished size and fold. Starting with a Google map screenshot, and using lots of traced iterations and a bit of creative digital manipulation, I designed a layout that was recognizable and gave us space to include all ten chosen picnic spots in a balanced composition.

Illustrations

With the base map sketch complete, I turned my attention to illustration. I began with pencil sketches which were transferred to watercolor paper and painted by hand. The base map was painted as one complete background, with detailed location callouts, spot and cover illustrations, as well as hand-lettered labels, painted separately and combined digitally to allow the most flexibility with the final design. Custom digitally illustrated icons complete the map key.

"We seemed to speak the same language, aesthetically and in terms of process. She understood my goals and rationale and worked methodically to circle closer at each phase to a final product that was beautiful and functional — something that was exactly what we each, and both, wanted to create."
