Book Cover

Capturing whimsy for a classic children's book cover.

Illustration

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory is a beloved children’s book published in 1963.

For this project, I designed a new book jacket for Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I imagined this as a 60th anniversary edition in the Penguin Classics Deluxe series, which are soft cover books with French flaps. The hand-lettered and illustrated cover design draws colors and inspiration from the 1960’s, when the book was first published, and captures the whimsical magic of the children’s classic novel.

Illustration Process

Inspiration for this project came from the candy-colored 1960's fashion, vintage candy packaging and signage, as well as stills from the original movie version of the story. Using that inspiration, I knew this cover needed to be hand-lettered. I began my design with sketching thumbnails for potential cover concepts, followed by refining the best three and then drawing a clean version of the winning design to use for creating the final digital illustration.

Adding Details

Lots of small details really bring character to this book design. I used elements from the cover illustration to create a pattern for the end papers, as well as accents for the front flap and cover page. A hand-lettered name and digitial portrait complete the author information on the back flap.
