The Leaf Tender
The Leaf Tender
Creating a vintage-inspired brand identity for a plant hotel concept.
Identity Design

The Leaf Tender is a plant hotel in Brooklyn providing expert care for plants whose owners are away.
Filling a niche market following a post-pandemic resurgence of interest in houseplants, The Leaf Tender has an unconventional mission: to provide houseplants the same pampering experience that their owners crave while on vacation. The hotel concept required a name and a brand identity that conveyed trust and warmth while still feeling fresh to its target audience of young, hip New York plant parents.

Visual Direction
Drawing inspiration from the eclectic style of the 1970's and modern hipster culture, I combined soft, organic shapes with bold elements and quirky type to create an identity that is clean and modern with vintage flair. A lush color palette--inspired by plants and iconic Brooklyn brick and grounded with modern black--sets the tone for this unique, luxury experience.

Logo Development
I began creating the logo with a thorough type study, aiming to choose a typeface that gave a nod to retro but felt at home in a modern urban setting. Lots of exploration and experiments with customization led to the final design. I rounded out the logo suite with several lockups and badge style versions of the logo, as well as a custom key submark, to fit a variety of use cases for the client and to add the vintage feeling of the brand.

Brand Applications
With the logo suite in place, I created custom icons and an LT monogram, also used for a brand pattern, to complete the visual elements and bring the brand to life across a variety of applications, including print collateral, a website, a booking app, digital and print ads, apparel and a vehicle wrap.
